Why it is where it is
The valley is a bowl ringed by peaks and completely hidden from the sea. That is the reason the nuns of the Santa Clara convent sheltered here in 1566 when pirates raided Funchal, and it is where the name comes from.
The parish covers 25.07 km², source: Visit Madeira, read August 26, 2026 and is the largest in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos.
The view and the road
The classic photograph is taken from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint at 1,095 m, source: Visit Madeira, read August 26, 2026, looking down into the bowl. The village itself sits at the bottom of it, and from down there the shape that makes the place famous is not visible.
The road in is steep and tightly wound. Doing both the viewpoint and the village is the only way to understand the geography, and it means driving that road twice.
Chestnuts
Chestnuts are the local speciality and autumn is when the harvest is on. That is the one time of year the village has an obvious reason to be visited for itself rather than for the view above it.
What is not perfect about it
The view everyone photographs is from the Eira do Serrado viewpoint high above, not from the valley floor, so arriving in the village is not the same as seeing the thing. The access road is steep and tightly wound, and it is not a road to hurry.
