The short answer

This is our own house in São Gonçalo, on the eastern edge of Funchal, run as an Alojamento Local. It sleeps eight across the main house and loft, has a terrace with a jacuzzi looking over the bay, and a loft set up as a working office. We manage it ourselves.

This one is ours. We own this house and let it as an Alojamento Local. David Leça manages it for us — the calendar, the bookings and the guests — so the reply will normally come from him, and the house still belongs to us. Nobody is paying us to feature it. That is a different relationship from the properties elsewhere on this site, and it should be labelled differently.

The house

It sits in São Gonçalo, on the hillside at the eastern edge of Funchal, looking down over the bay. It sleeps eight across the main house and the loft. There is a terrace with a jacuzzi, and the loft is set up as a working office.

What is not perfect about it

Every listing on the internet tells you the good parts. Here are the rest:

  • São Gonçalo is a hillside parish. The walk back up from the seafront is a real hill, and you will want a car or a taxi habit.
  • It is a fifteen-minute drive from the centre of Funchal, not a five-minute walk. That is the trade for the view and the quiet.
  • The jacuzzi sits on the patio rather than in a screened enclosure, and neighbours below have partial visibility of it. It is a hillside, and hillsides overlook each other.
  • The loft office is on the other side of the house from the bedrooms and has no ocean view. That is what makes it quiet, and it is also what it costs.
  • Madeira's winter is wet on the north side and mild here — but a hillside house in January is a different house from a hillside house in July.
