The Teleférico do Funchal climbs from Rua Dom Carlos I on the Funchal seafront to Largo das Babosas in Monte, over the rooftops and gardens of the city. Tickets are sold online and at the station, no advance booking is needed, and it runs every day except Christmas Day.

The pairing that only works six days a week
Up on the cable car, down on the toboggan, is the standard Monte day. The toboggan runs Monday to Saturday only.
On a Sunday the sensible move is a return ticket. The single fare only saves money if there is another way down, and on a Sunday there is not.
The other cable car
A separate line runs between Monte and the Botanical Garden. It is operated as its own service with its own ticket, and it is not covered by a Funchal to Monte return.
The Monte Palace garden entrance is beside the top station of the Funchal line, which is why the two are usually done together.
What is not perfect about it
The classic combination is cable car up and toboggan down, and the toboggan does not run on Sundays. A Sunday trip up means buying a return, or finding a bus or taxi back. A separate cable car runs between Monte and the Botanical Garden, and it is a different ticket.

Should you buy a single or a return?
A single works when the toboggan is running, Monday to Saturday. On a Sunday there is no toboggan, so a return is usually the cheaper end to the day.
Is the Botanical Garden cable car the same ticket?
No. Monte to the Botanical Garden is a separate line with a separate ticket.
