What it holds
The garden is run by IFCN, the regional institute that also manages the classified walking routes, and it sits on terraces above Funchal. Its collections are the reference set for Madeiran flora rather than a display planting.

The 2026 prices
From 1 January 2026 entry is €10.00, source: IFCN, 2026, read August 26, 2026 for visitors over twelve, €3.00, source: IFCN, 2026, read August 26, 2026 for ages six to twelve, and free for children under six. Residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira enter free on proof of residence.
This is the single figure most often wrong in English-language guides, because the change is recent and the old price was substantially lower.
Getting there
The garden is reachable by car, by taxi, by Horários do Funchal bus — the route numbers changed island-wide on 9 March 2026, so check the current one on the SIGA site rather than an older listing — or by the separate cable car that runs between Monte and the Botanical Garden.
That second cable car is a different line from the Funchal to Monte one, and a ticket for one is not a ticket for the other.
What is not perfect about it
The entry price rose on 1 January 2026, so any figure from before that date is out of date and much too low. Dogs other than guide dogs are not allowed, and neither are bicycles or ball games, which rules the garden out as somewhere to let children run.
Questions people actually ask

Yes, a separate line between Monte and the garden. It is not the same cable car as the Funchal to Monte one, and the tickets are not interchangeable.
