Rabaçal, eight trails and one restricted access road

View from the Paul da Serra plateau down into the forested Rabaçal valley, Madeira

The short answer

Rabaçal is the trailhead area on the Paúl da Serra plateau overlooking the largest laurel-forested valley on Madeira, and the hub for the PR6 family of levada walks. The viewpoint is free; every trail leaving it needs a paid, timed SIMplifica booking. The access road down to the shelter is restricted.

The facts

What starts here

Eight separate classified trails radiate from Rabaçal, including PR6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR6.1 Levada do Risco and PR6.3 Vereda da Lagoa do Vento. Each is €4.50, source: IFCN, 2026, read August 26, 2026 on its own; two or more on the same day are charged at €9.00, source: IFCN, 2026, read August 26, 2026, applied automatically by SIMplifica at checkout.

The viewpoint itself costs nothing and looks over the largest laurel-forested valley on the island.

Getting down to the shelter

Rabaçal is reached from ER 105 across the Paúl da Serra plateau. The access road from there down to the Casa de Abrigo is narrow and restricted, so walking down or taking the shuttle is the normal arrangement.

That descent is not trivial and it is done twice. Anyone budgeting a day at Rabaçal around trail times alone has left out a chunk of the walking.

What the classification means

Rabaçal sits inside the Madeira Nature Park and the Natura 2000 network, classified as an area of rest and silence. It is also the access point for the busiest walk on Madeira.

Those two facts are in tension, and the capped timeslot system exists because of it.

What is not perfect about it

The road down from ER 105 to the Casa de Abrigo is narrow and restricted, so the choice is to walk down or take the shuttle, and the climb back up comes at the end of the day rather than the start. It is classified as an area of rest and silence, which the volume of visitors on the 25 Fontes trail does not reflect.
