Caniçal: the windiest inhabited corner of the island

Red and ochre volcanic ridge at Ponta de São Lourenço, Madeira, with a lone hiker and sea beyond

The short answer

Caniçal is a former whaling village at Madeira’s eastern tip, now home to the commercial port and the free-trade zone. Its weather station recorded the highest mean wind speed and one of the two lowest rainfall totals on the island. It has no chain supermarket and no urgent care.

Caniçal is the dry end of Madeira, and the windy one. Both are measured rather than asserted, and both come from the same station out on the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula beside the town.

It is also a working port with a free-trade zone attached, which is not the usual picture of the east coast.

The wind, and the lack of rain

The Caniçal / Ponta de São Lourenço station recorded a mean wind speed of 19.9 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025, predominant direction north — the highest of any station on Madeira island that year. For comparison, Funchal/Observatório recorded 5.7 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026.

Rainfall runs the other way. The same station recorded 491.1 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025 and 385.8 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2024, making it one of the two driest stations on the island in 2024 alongside Funchal/Lido at 296.2 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Mean annual air temperature was 19.4 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. This is the eastern tip: low, bare, and in the path of everything the Atlantic sends down the channel.

What is actually in the town

Centro de Saúde do Caniçal, on Rua Garcia Moniz, opens on weekdays only and has no urgência. The nearest round-the-clock urgent care is at Machico, and the region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal.

Neither national chain lists a supermarket here, and Lidl has none anywhere in the archipelago — an absence from two locators rather than proof that no shop exists, since the island has many unbranded minimercados. Schooling is an Escola Básica com Pré-escolar e Creche on Rua Garcia Moniz. One bus route serves the town, running from Funchal via Machico out to the Ponta de São Lourenço trailhead. Route numbers changed island-wide to three digits on 9 March 2026.

Who lives here, and the drive

Caniçal counted 3,548, source: DREM / INE, 2021, read August 26, 2026 residents at the 2021 census. It is one of the five parishes of Machico municipality, and DREM publishes no parish-level estimates after the census, so the figure is four years old.

Modelled at free-flow speed over OpenStreetMap data, the airport is 11 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 28, 2026 and Funchal 30 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026. The airport figure is among the shortest on this site; the Funchal one is among the longer runs on the south-and-east side of the island, and it is the figure that decides daily life for anyone working in the capital.

Who it does not suit

Anyone who dislikes wind or industry — its station recorded the highest mean wind speed of any on Madeira island in 2025, and this is a working port town rather than a resort.

Questions people actually ask

How windy is Caniçal really?

Its station recorded a mean wind speed of 19.9 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025, predominant direction north — the highest of any station on Madeira island that year, and more than three times the 5.7 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 recorded at Funchal/Observatório. This is not a seasonal quirk. The eastern tip is low and bare, and the channel funnels the prevailing wind straight along it.

Is Caniçal the driest place on Madeira?

It is one of the two driest measured. In 2024 the station recorded 385.8 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026, alongside Funchal/Lido at 296.2 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 — the two lowest station totals on the island that year. In 2025 it recorded 491.1 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Dry here means bare rather than Mediterranean: there is very little vegetation on the peninsula for the same reason.

Does Caniçal have a supermarket?

Neither national chain lists one, and Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. That is an absence from two store locators rather than proof that nothing exists, because Madeira has many unbranded minimercados that no national locator carries. Machico, with three chain supermarkets, is a modelled ten-minute drive away.

Is there urgent care in Caniçal?

No. The centro de saúde opens on weekdays only. The nearest twenty-four-hour urgent care is at Machico, and the region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça in Funchal, a modelled 30 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026 away with no traffic in the figure.
