The short answer
Caniço is a large modern town on the south coast between Funchal and the airport, in Santa Cruz municipality. It was one of only seven Madeiran parishes to gain population between the last two censuses, it holds the island’s main concentration of foreign residents and second homes, and its health centre has no urgência.

SESARAM · check it · read August 26, 2026Caniço is where the arithmetic sends people. It is close enough to Funchal to use the city and far enough out to be cheaper, it is closer to the airport than to Funchal, and it has been building flats for two decades.
That has produced a town with an unusual profile for Madeira: young, working, growing, and heavily foreign in a region that is otherwise emptying. It has also produced a town that does not look much like the rest of the island.
What is actually in the town
Centro de Saúde do Caniço, on Caminho Velho do Jardim do Sol, opens on weekdays with a Saturday morning nursing service. It has no urgência. The nearest twenty-four-hour urgent care is out of the municipality, and the region's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal. For a household where that matters, it is the first thing to establish, not the last.
There is a Continente Modelo on Estrada João Gonçalves Zarco. Neither chain lists a Pingo Doce at a Caniço address, though the store filed under Santa Cruz concelho — Super Cancela — is sited at Garajau, which is in this parish. Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago.
State schooling includes primaries with pre-school on Estrada do Aeroporto and at Figueirinhas, plus an Escola Básica dos 2.º e 3.º ciclos. Route 503 between Funchal and Boqueirão is the trunk bus link, with a long list of local services around it. All Madeiran route numbers changed to three digits on 9 March 2026; these are the numbers checked in 2026.

That is the practical difference between Caniço and Santa Cruz, and it is not a small one. The same coast, ten minutes apart, produces terraces that are usable in winter and terraces that are not.

No. Centro de Saúde do Caniço opens on weekdays with a Saturday morning nursing service and has no urgent-care service at all. The region's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça in Funchal.

It is also the parish where the island's modern apartment building has concentrated, and it sits between the capital and the airport.
How high is Caniço?

The parish itself continues down to the sea at Caniço de Baixo and Garajau, so an address here can be at the top of a long hill or on the shoreline, and the two are different places to live.
