Funchal: the only place on Madeira with everything in it

The short answer
Funchal is Madeira's capital and its only city. It holds the archipelago's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department, at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça, both of the region's international schools, and most of its apartment stock. It is also the densest municipality in the region, and its ground climbs from the seafront to roughly eight hundred metres.

Governo Regional da Madeira · check it · read August 26, 2026Funchal is the one place on Madeira where everything a person needs sits inside a single municipality. The regional hospital, the university, the port, the courts, the specialists, both international schools and the great majority of professional services are here. Nothing else on the island is close.
It is also the steepest and most tourist-facing place on the island, and the gap between the seafront and the upper parishes is wider than the photographs suggest — in temperature, in cloud and in what a car is for.
What is actually in it
Five, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres serve the municipality: Bom Jesus, Dr. Rui Adriano de Freitas, Monte, Santo António and São Roque. Only Bom Jesus has an urgência, and it is not round the clock — the published hours are weekday late afternoon to midnight. What Funchal does have, and nowhere else in the archipelago does, is the region's only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department, at Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça.
Grocery shopping is a duopoly. 14 stores, source: Pingo Doce, read August 26, 2026 between the two national chains sit inside the municipality. Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago, which is worth establishing before a first weekly shop rather than during one.
State schooling runs from primaries with pre-school up to Escola Básica e Secundária Gonçalves Zarco and Escola Secundária Jaime Moniz. Funchal is also the only place in the archipelago with international schools: The International School of Madeira, running the Cambridge Primary Pathway, and International Sharing School – Madeira, running the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. There is no English-language school anywhere else on Madeira or on Porto Santo, which is why the schooling decision narrows the map before a budget does.
The weather here is not one weather
The Funchal/Observatório station recorded 669.7 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 of rain in 2025 and a mean annual air temperature of 20.8 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Mean wind was 5.7 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026, among the calmest readings published in the region, and the sunshine series gives 2,304.1 hours, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 for the year.
All of that describes the seafront. The municipality climbs from sea level to roughly eight hundred metres, and Monte — one of Funchal's own parishes — recorded 16.6 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025 against 20.4 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Funchal/Lido. That is a gap of nearly four degrees inside one municipality, in the same year, and it is why a flat above the marina and a house up by the Levada dos Tornos are not the same proposition. The measured coast-and-altitude differences are set out on their own page.
The drive, and the parking
Every drive time on this site is modelled. It comes from a routing engine run over OpenStreetMap data at free-flow speed, with no traffic, no roadworks and no time spent hunting for a space, so it reads as a floor rather than as a journey. On that basis the airport is 20 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 28, 2026 from the cathedral.
Parking is the part the brochures leave out. Funchal is the densest municipality in the region at 1,488.4 per km², source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026, and the old town was laid out for people and animals, not for cars.
Who lives here
The 2021 census counted 105,782, source: DREM / INE, 2021, read August 26, 2026 residents. DREM's estimate for the end of 2025 puts the municipality back above that, at 113,443, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026. The two are not the same kind of measurement — one is a count, the other a model — so the recovery is indicative, not proven.
Funchal also holds 59.5%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026 of the region's buildings with three or more dwellings. That is the statistical way of saying that a search for a flat rather than a house narrows to this municipality very fast. At the 2021 census 43.7%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026 of Madeira's non-EU foreign residents lived here.
What this page will not tell you
There is no price on this page, and none anywhere in this section. The research behind it dropped every price figure for want of a named, dated source, and a price per square metre with nothing behind it is worse than no figure at all. What the day of the deed costs is a different question, and that one has published answers.
Who it does not suit
Anyone who wants quiet, cheap, level ground or an easy parking space — it is by far the densest municipality in the region, and the lower town runs on tourism.
Questions people actually ask
Does Funchal have a hospital emergency department?
Yes, and it is the only one in the archipelago open around the clock: Hospital Dr. Nélio Mendonça. Of SESARAM's health centres only 9 of 47, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 have an urgência at all, and Funchal's own — Bom Jesus — runs weekday evenings rather than continuously. A replacement hospital is under construction at Santa Rita with 607, source: Governo Regional da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 beds planned; the regional government said in September 2025 that it expects it in full operation by the end of 2029. It is not open.
Is there an international school in Funchal?
Two, and they are the only two in the archipelago. The International School of Madeira runs the Cambridge Primary Pathway; International Sharing School – Madeira runs the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. Both appear in the regional government's school registry. There is no English-language school anywhere else on Madeira or on Porto Santo, so a family committed to that route is committed to this municipality or its immediate neighbours.
Can a person live in Funchal without a car?
In the lower parishes, yes, and it is the one part of the island where that is straightforward — the shops, the hospital and the bus network are all within walking distance of each other. Above the city it changes quickly. The same municipality climbs to roughly eight hundred metres, and it is gradient rather than distance that decides whether a walk home is a walk home.
Is Funchal cheap?
No. It is the densest municipality in the region at 1,488.4 per km², source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026, it holds 59.5%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026 of the region's multi-dwelling buildings, and it is where the professional services and the tourism sit. This site publishes no property price figures anywhere, because the research behind it found no named, dated price source it was prepared to stand behind.
