Ponta do Sol: the warmest station in the region, and a claim that cannot be tested

Ponta do Sol, Madeira, with its clock tower and terraced hillside seen from the pebble beach

The short answer

Ponta do Sol is a compact town in a sheltered ravine on the south-west coast. The Lugar de Baixo station beside it recorded the highest mean annual air temperature of any station in the region in both 2023 and 2024. Its municipality has two health centres and neither has an urgência.

Ponta do Sol has the best-evidenced warm claim on the island and the worst-evidenced sunny one, and telling those two apart is most of what this page is for.

The town itself is small, sheltered and pebble-shored, and it acquired an unexpected second identity in 2021 when the regional government put a nomad village in it.

The warmest reading in the region

The Lugar de Baixo station, beside Ponta do Sol, recorded 21.7 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 mean annual air temperature in both 2023 and 2024 — the highest of any station in the region in both years — and 20.9 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025. Rainfall was 731.6 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025, and mean wind 7.5 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026, which is modest for this coast.

The reason is the shape of the ground. The town sits in a sheltered south-facing ravine, and the regional water-resources study names Lugar de Baixo alongside Funchal as one of the two lowest-rainfall points on the island in the long-run record.

The sunshine claim, and why it is not repeated here

The municipality’s investor portal states that Ponta do Sol is the concelho with the most hours of sunshine and the smallest temperature swings. Visit Madeira softens that to generally enjoying the most hours of sunshine per year.

Neither cites a measurement, and none exists. Only three stations in the archipelago publish insolation — Funchal/Observatório, Porto Santo/Aeroporto and Santa Catarina/Aeroporto — and none of them is in this municipality. The claim is therefore recorded as a claim and not repeated as a fact. The temperature record above is a different assertion, it is measured, and it stands.

What is actually in the town

The municipality has two SESARAM health centres, Ponta do Sol on Rua V Centenário and Dr. Tito Noronha at Canhas. Neither has an urgência. The nearest twenty-four-hour urgent care is out of the municipality, and the region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal.

Neither national chain lists a supermarket at a Ponta do Sol address, and Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. That is an absence from two locators rather than proof that nothing exists, because the island has many unbranded minimercados no national locator carries. Schooling runs from a primary with pre-school on Rua Padre Leão Henriques to Escola Básica e Secundária da Ponta do Sol.

Buses reach Funchal both by expressway and by the old Estrada Regional, with four local routes. Route numbers changed island-wide to three digits on 9 March 2026.

The nomad village, and its status

The Digital Nomads Madeira Islands project was created by the regional government through Startup Madeira and established a nomad village at Ponta do Sol from 1 February 2021, with a free working space at the John dos Passos Cultural Centre on Rua Príncipe D. Luís. The project site states the village is still active and that it has welcomed more than ten thousand people.

The wording on that page refers to 2025 while the footer reads 2026, and no official page states a 2026 status in words. Current status is therefore probable rather than confirmed, and anyone planning around it should check before relying on it.

Who lives here, and which coast this is

Ponta do Sol parish counted 4,255, source: DREM / INE, 2021, read August 26, 2026 residents at the 2021 census; DREM estimates the municipality at 8,806, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026 at the end of 2025, with a density of 190.4 per km², source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026 and an ageing index of 184.9, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026. Vacant dwellings here grew +28.1%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026 between the two censuses, the second-steepest increase in the region after Santana.

The sources also disagree about where this is. The municipality’s main page places itself to the west of the island; its own investor portal says south coast; Visit Madeira files it under the west. The disagreement is recorded rather than resolved. The modelled drive to Funchal is 28 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026 and to the airport 41 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 28, 2026.

Who it does not suit

Buyers who need a big beach or a big town — the seafront is pebble, neither national supermarket chain lists a store here, and neither of the municipality’s two health centres has an urgência.

Questions people actually ask

Is Ponta do Sol the sunniest place in Madeira?

It cannot be tested. Only three stations in the archipelago publish sunshine hours and none of them is in this municipality, so no measurement exists to check the claim against. The municipality’s investor portal asserts it; Visit Madeira hedges it. What is measured is temperature: the Lugar de Baixo station recorded 21.7 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in both 2023 and 2024, the highest reading in the region. That is a different claim, and it holds.

Does Ponta do Sol have an urgência?

No. The municipality has two SESARAM health centres — Ponta do Sol and Dr. Tito Noronha at Canhas — and neither has urgent care. The region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal, a modelled 28 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026 away, and the nearest round-the-clock urgent care is outside the municipality.

Is the nomad village at Ponta do Sol still running?

Probably, but the evidence is not conclusive. The project site says the village is still active, with a free working space at the John dos Passos Cultural Centre, and that it has welcomed more than ten thousand people. Its wording refers to 2025 while its footer reads 2026, and no official page states a 2026 status in words. Anyone planning around it should confirm directly.

Is there a supermarket in Ponta do Sol?

Neither national chain lists one at a Ponta do Sol address, and Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. That is an absence from two store locators, not proof that nothing exists — Madeira has many unbranded minimercados that no national locator carries, and this page could not verify them.
