Porto Moniz: the far corner, and the mildest station on the island

Natural volcanic rock pools at Porto Moniz, Madeira, with people sunbathing and swimming by the sea

The short answer

Porto Moniz is the least populated and least dense municipality in the region, at the island’s north-western corner. Despite a fully exposed position it recorded one of the mildest mean annual temperatures on Madeira, because its station sits at sea level. It has round-the-clock urgent care and no chain supermarket.

Porto Moniz is the end of the road, and it behaves like it. It is the emptiest municipality in the region by both population and density, it has the oldest population profile, and neither national supermarket chain lists a store here.

It is also, on the published figures, one of the mildest places on the island — which is the opposite of what its position on the map suggests.

The climate anomaly, and why it happens

The Porto Moniz station recorded a mean annual air temperature of 20.5 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025. Santana, on the same coast, recorded 16.2 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026, and Funchal/Observatório on the sheltered south coast recorded 20.8 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Porto Moniz is warmer than the north-coast town and close to the capital, despite facing the open Atlantic.

Altitude is the reason: the station sits at sea level, and Santana’s sits several hundred metres up. DREM also reports the smallest gap between mean maximum and mean minimum temperature of any Madeiran station here over the two decades to 2019, at 4.0 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Rainfall does follow the north-coast rule — 845.7 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2025, well above the south coast.

What is actually in the town

Centro de Saúde do Porto Moniz, on Rua do Dr. Cosme, opens on weekdays and runs a Serviço de Atendimento Urgente twenty-four hours a day, every day. In a municipality this remote that is the single most consequential fact about living here, and it puts Porto Moniz in the group of 9 of 47, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres with an urgência at all.

Neither national chain lists a supermarket. That is an absence from two locators rather than proof that no shop exists — the island has many unbranded minimercados that no national locator carries — but a household planning a weekly shop should assume a drive. Schooling is creche to secondary in one establishment, Escola Básica e Secundária com Pré-escolar e Creche do Porto Moniz.

Buses reach Funchal by two different routes, one via São Vicente and one via Calheta, plus local services. Route numbers changed island-wide to three digits on 9 March 2026.

Who lives here

The pools, and the forest

The natural swimming pools are municipally operated and charged for all year. The municipality gives the swimming area as 3,800 m², source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Moniz, read August 26, 2026 and the solarium as 3,217 m², source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Moniz, read August 26, 2026, with a bar, changing rooms, a playground, a first-aid post and lifeguards on duty. Opening is shorter in winter than in summer. Separate free-access pools exist at Cachalote and at the Clube Naval do Seixal.

The municipality also states that it holds more Laurissilva forest than any other Madeiran municipality, and gives its own area as 8,040 hectares, source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Moniz, read August 26, 2026. Its characterisation page still quotes the 2001 census for population, which is why every population figure here comes from DREM instead.

The drive

Modelled at free-flow speed over OpenStreetMap data, Funchal is 58 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026 and the airport 70 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 28, 2026. These are the longest runs on this site, and they are floors — no traffic, no roadworks, no weather, no time behind a coach on a coast road.

Who it does not suit

Anyone who needs Funchal regularly, or who wants neighbours — it is the least populated and least dense municipality in the region, roughly an hour from the capital on a modelled drive, with the oldest population profile and no chain supermarket.

Questions people actually ask

Is Porto Moniz cold?

No — it recorded 20.5 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 mean annual air temperature in 2025, against 16.2 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Santana on the same coast and 20.8 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Funchal on the sheltered south. It also has the smallest recorded gap between mean maximum and mean minimum temperature of any Madeiran station, 4.0 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026. Its station is at sea level, which is the whole explanation.

Is there a supermarket in Porto Moniz?

Neither national chain lists one, and Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. That is an absence from two store locators rather than proof that nothing exists, because Madeira has many unbranded minimercados that no national locator carries. A household here should plan on driving for a full weekly shop.

Is there emergency care in Porto Moniz?

The centro de saúde runs a Serviço de Atendimento Urgente twenty-four hours a day, every day — one of only 9 of 47, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres with an urgência at all. It is not a hospital. The region’s only twenty-four-hour hospital emergency department is in Funchal, a modelled 58 minutes, source: OSRM over OpenStreetMap data, read August 26, 2026 away, and that drive is a free-flow model with no weather in it.
