Porto Santo · A separate island
Porto Santo: the other island, and what the crossing actually is

The short answer
Porto Santo is a separate island north-east of Madeira, flat and arid, with a long golden beach along its south coast. It is the driest and windiest inhabited place in the archipelago and by far its fastest-growing municipality. There is no road link: the crossing is a ferry or a short flight.

SESARAM · check it · read August 26, 2026Porto Santo is not a quieter part of Madeira. It is a different island with a different climate, a different landscape and a different set of practical problems, and the most important of them is that there is no road to it.
It is also, on DREM’s numbers, growing faster than anywhere else in the region — which is not what an arid island with one town usually does.
The crossing, and the sources that disagree about it
Porto Santo Line runs the ferry, the Lobo Marinho, and has held the link since winning the public tender in October 1995; the current vessel has served since June 2003. The operator’s own FAQ gives the crossing as about 2h15, source: Porto Santo Line, read August 26, 2026. Visit Madeira publishes that figure on one page and a longer one on another. Both readings are recorded here and neither is preferred, because there is no basis in the sources for choosing.
The distance is disputed in the same way. The municipality gives 50 km, source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, read August 26, 2026 from Madeira; Porto Santo Line gives 71 km, source: Porto Santo Line, read August 26, 2026. Again, both are recorded. Visit Madeira states the alternative to the ferry is an air shuttle of about 15 minutes, source: Visit Madeira, read August 26, 2026. No airline is named on this page: the only official source naming one is a municipal brochure from 2018, and it is out of date.
The climate is a separate climate
The IPMA climate normal for the Porto Santo station gives 381.7 mm, source: IPMA, 1991–2020, read August 26, 2026 of annual rainfall, against 574.3 mm, source: IPMA, 1991–2020, read August 26, 2026 in the Funchal normal. Both are IPMA 1991–2020 normals, so the comparison is like-for-like. The single-year figures are cleaner: 579.7 mm, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Porto Santo/Aeroporto in 2025, with a mean annual air temperature of 19.7 °C, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 and 2,284.7 hours, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 of sunshine.
The wind is the thing to plan around. Mean wind at Porto Santo/Aeroporto was 17.9 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 in 2024, predominant direction north, against 5.7 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Funchal/Observatório and 4.7 km/h, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, read August 26, 2026 at Funchal/Lido. With no mountains to force air upwards, the island has none of Madeira’s altitude or north–south contrasts — and none of its shelter either.
What is actually on the island
Centro de Saúde Dr. Francisco Rodrigues Jardim, on Rua Dr. José Diamantino Lima, opens on weekdays and on Saturdays and runs a Serviço de Atendimento Urgente twenty-four hours a day, every day. It also has inpatient beds — the page lists visiting hours for admitted patients. It is one of 9 of 47, source: SESARAM, read August 26, 2026 SESARAM health centres with an urgência at all, and on an island with no road out that matters more here than anywhere.
There are two Pingo Doce stores in Vila Baleira. Lidl has no store anywhere in the archipelago. There is one state school, Escola Básica e Secundária com Pré-escolar e Creche Prof. Dr. Francisco de Freitas Branco, covering creche to secondary. There is no international or English-language school; both of the archipelago’s are in Funchal.
Who lives here, and how fast that is changing
The 2021 census counted 5,149, source: DREM / INE, 2021, read August 26, 2026 residents. DREM estimates 6,916, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026 at the end of 2025, a rise of about a third in four years and by far the fastest growth of any Madeiran municipality. A census count and a modelled estimate are different measurements, so that growth figure is indicative rather than proven, but the direction is not in doubt.
The housing mix moved too. Usual-residence dwellings grew fastest here of anywhere in the region between the two censuses, at +6.7%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026, while second homes fell −11.8%, source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 2021, read August 26, 2026. Density at the end of 2025 was 162.0 per km², source: DREM — Direção Regional de Estatística da Madeira, 31 December 2025, read August 26, 2026.
The island itself
Porto Santo covers 42.17 km², source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, read August 26, 2026, is a little over eleven kilometres long and six wide, and is only lightly mountainous — the highest point, Pico do Facho, does not exceed 517 m, source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, read August 26, 2026. The south coast is dominated by 9 km, source: Câmara Municipal do Porto Santo, read August 26, 2026 of golden sand, which the municipality’s own brochure notes is essentially carbonate, formed from coral, shell and sea-urchin sediment rather than from eroded rock.
That is the honest frame for the whole island. It is not a greener, cheaper Madeira. It is a low, dry, windy Atlantic island with one town on it and a very quiet winter.
Who it does not suit
Anyone who needs the main island regularly, or who wants green — there is no bridge, the crossing is a ferry or a short flight, the landscape is arid, and the winter is very quiet.
Questions people actually ask
How long is the ferry from Madeira to Porto Santo?
The operator’s own FAQ gives about 2h15, source: Porto Santo Line, read August 26, 2026. Visit Madeira publishes about 2h30 on its how-to-get-here page and about 2h15 on its Porto Santo port page.
